The major averages edged off their lows late Thursday afternoon after being dragged down by weak economic data. The Dow Jones industrial average and the S&P 500 each fell 1.1% while the Nasdaq slid 0.9% after being down more than 1%. Volume on the NYSE and the Nasdaq was tracking much higher than on Wednesday.
