Stocks were down 1% Wednesday afternoon following weak economic data and a downbeat World Bank report. The Dow Jones industrial average sank 1.7%, the S&P 500 dropped 1.4% and the Nasdaq slid 1%. Volume was mixed in the stock market today, falling 1% on the Nasdaq and rising 13% on the NYSE compared to the same time Tuesday. Auto, metals and energy stocks were the biggest decliners after U.S.
