Twenty-three miles east of Reno, Nevada, sits one of the largest buildings in the world: Tesla‘s (NASDAQ: TSLA) Gigafactory. Elon Musk’s electric-car maker built the enormous facility, which will have the largest footprint of any building in the world, upon its completion in 2020, to mass-produce the millions of batteries necessary for Tesla’s electric vehicles. The Gigafactory is crucial because Tesla’s planned production target of 1.5 million vehicles per year would consume more than the entire world’s supply of lithium-ion batteries.
