Oil falls around 2 percent as profit-taking kicks in
Crude oil futures dropped around 2 percent on Wednesday, heading back towards $30 a barrel as profit-taking wiped out a chunk of the gains notched up in the previous session on hopes for output cuts. Brent crude (LCOc1) had declined 51 cents to $31.29 a barrel by 0308 GMT, after hitting a session-low of $31.20 a barrel. U.S. crude (CLc1) fell 72 cents to $30.73 a barrel, recovering slightly from a session-low of $30.30 a barrel.

Asian stocks struggle as headwinds grow; gold shines
Asian stocks struggled to hold early gains on Wednesday as several indicators screamed caution, and a relapse in oil prices made sentiment even more fragile ahead of a Federal Reserve policy statement due later. Technology giant Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O) forecast of its first revenue drop in 13 years signalled a risk of diminishing corporate profitability and more downgrades.

China shares tumble again as global markets await Fed statement
Chinese shares fell sharply again on Wednesday after plunging in the previous session, taking no comfort from a rise in global markets, with sentiment fragile ahead of a policy statement later from the U.S. Federal Reserve. China’s stock markets have slumped 23-24 percent so far this year, knocking nearly 12 trillion yuan ($1.8 trillion) off the value of the indexes as of Tuesday night. Oil had hit a 12-year low last week due to oversupply and concerns about faltering global growth, particularly in China.

Haier’s GE unit buy highlights growing China M&A maturity
In the lead up to General Electric Co’s (GE.N) appliance unit auction, Haier Group did something Chinese bidders have rarely dared to do in a competitive global M&A deal. While informal discussions centered around a bid of $4.2 billion, people familiar with the matter told Reuters, Haier submitted a knock-out $5.4 billion binding offer, moving decisively to trump at least six other bidders including South Korea’s Samsung Electronics , China’s Midea Group and Turkey’s Arcelik (ARCLK.IS).

Two United Airlines investors raise stakes to influence company
United, the second largest U.S. airline by capacity, said Altimeter Capital Management LP increased its ownership to 3.1 percent, while PAR Investment Partners LP had taken a 2.4 percent stake. The companies have had smaller stakes in United for months and have already engaged the airline on such issues, the filings said. Shares of the airline rose less than 1 percent in extended trading.
