Winter holiday travel to be busier this year: U.S. airlines group

U.S. carriers are expected to fly 38.1 million passengers worldwide from Dec. 18 through Jan. 3, up 3 percent from a year earlier, Washington-based trade group Airlines for America said in a news release. “We attribute the increase to the improving economy and the fact that airfare remains affordable, having declined 4.3 percent through the first nine months of the year,” the group’s chief economist, John Heimlich, said in the release. The group said airlines will use larger planes to match the demand.

Walmart Pay will be introduced in select U.S. stores on Thursday and in additional stores after the holiday season, Wal-Mart executives said on a video call with reporters on Wednesday. Walmart Pay will be available on devices using Apple’s (AAPL.O) iOS or Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Android operating system and allows payments with any major credit, debit, pre-paid or Walmart gift cards, the company said.

GM fund approves $594.5 million in ignition claims

General Motors Co’s (GM.N) independent fund set up to compensate victims of accidents involving faulty ignition switches awarded $594.5 million and approved 399 death and injury claims, the fund said on Thursday. The fund run by compensation expert Ken Feinberg said 91 percent of proposed awards were accepted by the victims. The fund covered injury and death claims in 2.6 million cars recalled from 2003 through 2011.
