In 2000, Michael McDaniel sought to build his financial advisory business. Pitching tax-free bonds to high-net-worth individuals, he’d glue a nickel to his business card. “That was my version of marketing,” he recalled with a chuckle. “I’d give them my business card and say, ‘That’s your first tax-free nickel from me.'” Despite his old-fashioned approach, McDaniel says that people took notice.
