BlackRock runs a Municipal Bond Fund (MYI) that I follow. When these municipal bond funds are rallying to new 52 week highs, I interpret the leadership position as a defensive one, not an offensive one for the equities market generally. This one needs a little more work to analyze this week. This chart actually pushed through the previous intra-week highs and settled back a little bit, but this is the highest close. Back in 2012 when this topped out, the stock markets were starting the beginning of a new 3-year run. I did notice one thing on the chart that was very odd.

U.S. consumer sentiment rebounded strongly in early October, suggesting that the economic recovery remained on track despite headwinds from a strong dollar and weak global demand that have weighed on the industrial sector, particularly manufacturing. The snapback in sentiment reported on Friday underscored robust domestic demand and offered hope that consumer spending would remain solid enough to support economic growth, which has slowed significantly in recent months. The University of Michigan said its consumer sentiment index rose to 92.1 in early October from a reading of 87.2 September.

The S&P 500’s three weeks of gains marked its longest winning streak since May and extended a rebound from the market’s August selloff. The stock was among the biggest boosts to the S&P 500 and Dow. Mattel (MAT.O) jumped 6 percent to $23.89 and was the biggest percentage gainer in the S&P 500, even after its sales missed estimates.

The amount was less than the $400 million the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) was claiming in damages after the jury on Tuesday said Apple (AAPL.O) infringed its patent for improving the performance of computer processors. Apple said it would appeal the verdict, but declined to comment further. WARF praised the verdict and said it was important to protect the university’s inventions from unauthorized use.
