Fed policymakers downplay divisions on U.S. rate hike

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) – Federal Reserve policymakers are not as divided as it may appear and are generally operating under the same framework for determining when to raise interest rates, one Fed official said on Thursday, while another said the differences of opinion reflect the countervailing economic data. Fed Chair Janet Yellen and other officials have said they expect a rate hike will be needed by the end of this year, but two Fed governors this week urged caution.

Oil prices snap week-long fall on U.S. output decline, gasoline drawdown

Crude oil futures rose on Friday to snap a week-long decline as investors bet falling U.S. production would cut a global surplus, while the country’s gasoline and distillate inventories dropped more than expected. November Brent finished down 44 cents at $48.71 a barrel on Thursday before expiring. U.S. crude’s front-month November contract (CLc1) rose 41 cents, or 0.9 percent, to $46.79 a barrel, after settling down 26 cents, or 0.6 percent, at $46.38 a barrel.

Cable was an early mover … or late depending on your perspective I suppose … selling down a rapid 40 or so points in the very late US afternoon/early Sydney …  a notoriously illiquid time of day. It bounced back nearly as quickly, with the move seemingly not related to any news release, more to do with a cluster of stops below 1.5475 and a thin market. it subsequently retraced its loss and tracked pretty much sideways for the session thereafter.
