Major averages were down sharply in late-afternoon trading Thursday as global growth concerns weighed. The Nasdaq slumped 2.1% while the Dow Jones industrial average and S&P 500 fell 1.5%. NYSE and Nasdaq volume was tracking sharply higher than Wednesday’s levels. The Nasdaq is barely holding above its 200-day moving average, a longer-term support level.
