The stock market closed lower Monday, but rescued some losses, thanks to a burst of buying late in the session. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 lost 0.3% as the S&P closed near its 50-day moving average. The small-cap Russell 2000 did worse, dropping 0.7%. Preliminary figures showed volume rose. If confirmed, it would be the second straight day of losses in higher volume for the S&P 500. Declining stocks led advancers by 8-to-5.
