“A strong dollar is going to hurt exports and the revenue line of companies, which wasn’t strong to begin with,” said Rick Fier, director of trading at Conifer Securities in New York. The buoyant data comes after Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said on Friday that the central bank could raise interest rates this year if the economy keeps improving as expected. Yellen’s comments and the dollar’s rise pushed the monthly gain for each of the three major U.S. stock indexes to below 2 percent in the past two trading sessions.

A Connecticut venture capital executive accused of insider trading and of cheating his clients out of tens of millions of dollars has fled the country, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said. Iftikar Ahmed, a former general partner at Oak Investment Partners, left the United States some time before May 18 in violation of a judge’s order in the criminal insider trading case restricting his travel to three U.S. states, the SEC said in a court filing last week.

Fischer: Fed could slow rate rises if global growth falters
Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Stanley Fischer said policy makers will consider global growth as they begin to raise interest rates, and that they could increase them more gradually should the world economy falter. “If foreign growth is weaker than anticipated, the consequences for the U.S. economy could lead the Fed to remove accommodation more slowly than otherwise,” Fischer said in a speech prepared for delivery Tuesday at Tel Aviv University. The Fed will weigh how raising rates will affect other nations, said Fischer, 71, a former governor of the Bank of Israel.
