The dollar held on to broad gains after minutes from the Federal Reserve’s April meeting minutes contained no major surprises. A sharp drop in prices of iron ore, Australia’s main export commodity, has weighed on the Aussie.

Federal Reserve officials believed it would be premature to hike interest rates in June even though most felt the U.S. economy was set to rebound from a dismal start to the year, according to minutes from their April policy meeting released on Wednesday. The central bank debated whether a slew of disappointing data, including weak consumer spending, signaled a temporary slump or evidence of a longer-lasting slowdown, with most participants agreeing economic growth would climb to a healthier pace and the labor market would strengthen.

The head of Japan’s auto lobby said on Thursday he hopes for an interim report on the cause of Takata Corp’s (7312.T) air bag problems by the end of the year from any one of the teams investigating the issue. More than 50 million cars have been recalled worldwide since 2008 over Takata’s potentially deadly air bag inflators that can explode with too much force and spray metal shards inside the car.

Takata Corp (7312.T) said on Wednesday it plans to boost production of parts needed to replace potentially deadly air bag inflators that could spray vehicle occupants with metal shards. Takata shares fell 10.2 percent to 1,353 yen in Tokyo on Wednesday. The air bag inflators have been found to explode with too much force, spraying metal fragment inside cars and forcing automakers to recall more than 53 million vehicles worldwide since 2008.

In Goldman Sachs Group Inc’s latest move to bolster its street cred as a cool, tech-savvy bank, it is holding its annual shareholder meeting in San Francisco on Thursday. Goldman has been one of the top investment banks handling mergers and IPOs for the tech sector since the dot-com boom of the 1990s. Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein has been saying for years that Goldman, founded in 1869, is more of a cutting-edge technology company than a gray-haired investment bank.

The Markit/JMMA flash Japan Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) rose to a seasonally adjusted 50.9 in May from a final 49.9 in April. Japan’s economy expanded in January-March at the fastest pace in a year, but much of the growth came from inventories, data showed on Wednesday.
