China February flash HSBC PMI at four-month high
Activity in China’s mammoth factory sector edged up to a four-month high in February but export orders shrank at their fastest rate in 20 months, a private survey showed, painting a murky outlook that argues for more policy support. While domestic demand picked up slightly, the new export orders sub-index shed three hefty points from January to skid to 47.1, the sharpest rate of contraction since June 2013. “Domestic economic activity is likely to remain sluggish and external demand looks uncertain,” said Qu Hongbin, HSBC’s chief economist in China.

U.S. home prices rose again in December and activity in the services sector expanded in February at its fastest pace since October, but a gauge of consumer confidence fell, according to reports published on Tuesday. Toyota says hard to respond to union request for 13,300 yen wage rise
Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday that it was hard to respond in initial wage talks to the union’s request for a 13,300 yen ($112) monthly wage increase. Tatsuro Ueda, managing officer in charge of human resources, also said the union’s request for bonuses equivalent to 6.8 months of salary was high and hard to agree to. The 13,300 yen increase would include a 6,000 yen rise in base wages and 7,300 yen in seniority-related gains.

Strong dollar hurts HP’s earnings forecast, shares plummet
“Revenue was a little short on the top end, the guidance for the second quarter was a little below where the consensus was,” said Daniel Morgan, a portfolio manager at Synovus Trust Co. The combined effect of those separation costs and the hit from the strong dollar will almost halve HP’s free cash flow this fiscal year to about $3.5 billion to $4 billion, down from a forecast three months ago of $6.5 billion to $7 billion. Palo Alto-based HP follows Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N) in seeing a significant negative impact from the strong dollar.

Malaysia’s AirAsia X to cut more costs, defer plane orders: acting CEO
Malaysia’s AirAsia X Bhd (AIRX.KL) will cut flights on unprofitable routes, reorganize staff and defer some aircraft deliveries to turn around the loss-making long-haul budget carrier, the airline’s acting chief executive said on Wednesday. “Capacity reduction and cost-cutting within the organization would be two strategies this year,” Benyamin Ismail, the acting Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia X said in a telephone interview. Squeezed by intense competition in Southeast Asia’s crowded aviation business, the airline has lost money for the last five quarters.
