WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. sales of new homes surged in August, led by a wave of buying in the West and Northeast.

After a surge in refinances in the previous week, the volume of mortgage applications continued to slide as interest rates rose to their highest level in several months.

Oil driller Continental Resources Inc has been revising its corporate history in ways that diminish the publicly traded company’s accomplishments under CEO Harold Hamm, part of a legal strategy that might help Hamm avoid the largest divorce award in U.S.

Major averages rallied off lows and were near session highs more than two hours into Wednesday’s session. The Nasdaq led the way, up 0.6%, after touching its 50-day moving average. The Dow Jones industrial average and S&P 500 added 0.5% each. NYSE volume was tracking higher than Tuesday’s levels. Nasdaq volume was lower. In economic news, August new-home sales came in at 504,000, well above expectations.
