BP ruling raises liability stakes for high-risk industries
District Judge Carl Barbier in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Thursday found that BP was guilty of “gross negligence” ahead of the rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. The “gross negligence” designation could quadruple BP’s federal financial penalties, adding as much as $18 billion to the bill for worst offshore environmental disaster in U.S. BP said it would appeal the decision, arguing that “the law is clear that proving gross negligence is a very high bar that was not met in this case.”

The Bank Of Japan (BOJ) says it is looking for consumer spending to stay on a recovery path, focusing on the relatively small increase in nominal wages rather than the steep slide in real wages. Goldman believes the BOJ’s view is founded on money illusion; and crucially, expect the positive effects to be clearly outweighed by the negative impact of lower real wages, and on a net basis see consumption falling. Simply put, once people wake up to the illusion of money, its impact will also fade.
