Stocks firmed up and showed solid gains by midday Thursday after a morning two step that had them opening higher, then immediately heading south. The Nasdaq rose 0.7%; the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones industrial average were up 0.5%. That put the S&P 500 and the Dow at all-time highs. Volume was running significantly higher on the Nasdaq and moderately higher on the NYSE.
